If love of adventure and travel is in “your family’s blood,” we would be honored to offer you tips, hard learned lessons, and seasoned wisdom that we have picked up exploring and relocating to multiple countries with our son and being part of a rich community that travels with kids of differing abilities.
How did we get here to offer you our services? Like anyone who has sat across from a pediatric psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, health care provider – whomever — and is told that their child is anything other than what you had envisioned for them, my husband and I were in “search mode” after our son was diagnosed at 3 and a half years old with autism and ADHD. Our family embarked upon a personal odyssey over the past 10 years where he has revealed himself to us. Somehow, we have created the appropriate canvas for our son to scribble when he wants to, and at other times, create master strokes when he needs to do so. He is his own work of art, and we like to think of ourselves as the “midwives” of his process of autonomy, individuality, creativity, and just plain being a kid.
We are a family of adventurers. While it should have come as no surprise that he was as well, it did solely because of his autism diagnosis. We were shocked at how mesmerized our son was at takeoff and at peace during landing. With every airport check-in and layover, he immediately ran towards the biggest picture window to watch the magic of aviation (which led to him being momentarily lost at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, but that’s a story for another day). As my Peruvian friends would say, “es en la sangre.” Travel is in the blood. At the age of thirteen, he is now the driving force behind all our family trips, both international and domestic.
In our process of discovery, we had to create a lot of services and piece together a network that worked for us. Given our success, we have also helped families in our personal circle who sought our suggestions on traveling with their kids of differing abilities. Our goal now is to share this knowledge with as many as possible.
This is the start of the work that we do here at ITKD Group. We have direct experience with long-term international relocation, domestic and international travel, enrollment in international schools, managing international medical teams and professionals, and reintegrating back into your home environments for kids on the autism spectrum, with ADHD diagnoses, sensory challenges, and occupational skill challenges. We are, without a doubt, a work in progress, but we want to share what we have so that you can live the life you choose!
